Diploma in Purchasing and Supplies Management

Overview

Diploma in Purchasing and Supplies Management

  1. RATIONALE

Kenya has experienced drastic changes in the business environment over the past decade.  The competition in the market has increased with the advent of liberalization.  Organizations, both in the public and private sectors have had to adjust and seek ways of becoming more efficient and more effective in the provision of goods and services.  There is a need therefore to develop both the function and profession of purchasing and supply.  Organizations need to improve their strategic and tactical thinking so that they can be able to remove waste and create value in their operations.  To accomplish this, these organizations will require personnel with holistic perceptions of the chain of activities in order to function effectively at any particular point in it.  There has been a growing demand from the potential students who have been inquiring about the course at the Centre.

Formerly, The Extra-Mural Department has been offering a three months certificate course in Purchasing and Supplies management.  However, many students who have wished to further their studies in the field have to go to training organizations which offered the diploma level certificate, though they would have preferred to train with the University of Nairobi.  It is out of this demand that the department wish to offer the course.

Purchasing and Supplies management is a multi disciplinary course and therefore it borrows heavily from fields like marketing and management.

2. Mode of Delivery

The course will be offered by face to face mode in all Extra-Mural centres of the University of Nairobi.  Later the course will be offered through the distance learning mode.
