The Department occupies a unique position within the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences by bringing together expertise in Management Science, Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, Information Systems, and Project Planning and Management. These fields are united by a common purpose of developing innovative and evidence-based solutions to complex organizational, economic, and societal challenges.
Our mission is to prepare graduates who can think critically, make informed decisions, lead effectively, and create sustainable value in both public and private sector organizations. Through rigorous academic training, practical learning experiences, and research engagement, we equip our students with the analytical, technological, managerial, and leadership skills required to succeed in an increasingly dynamic and interconnected world.
At the heart of our Department are five thematic areas that guide our teaching, research, and engagement activities:
- Decision Sciences, which focuses on analytical modelling, business analytics, optimization, and evidence-based decision-making;
- Operations Management, which seeks to improve organizational performance through effective process design, quality management, and operational excellence;
- Information Systems, which examines how digital technologies and information resources can transform organizations and society;
- Supply Chain Management, which addresses the efficient and sustainable management of procurement, logistics, and global supply networks; and
- Project Planning and Management, which develops the knowledge and skills required to design, implement, monitor, evaluate, and manage projects that deliver meaningful development outcomes.
These thematic areas enable us to address some of the most pressing challenges facing businesses, governments, and communities today while ensuring that our graduates remain relevant in a rapidly evolving global environment.
The Department offers a diverse portfolio of academic programmes at diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. These include the PhD in Project Planning and Management, Master of Science in Procurement and Supply Chain Management, Master of Science in Operations and Technology Management, Master of Arts in Project Planning and Management, Postgraduate Diploma in Project Planning and Management, Bachelor of Project Planning and Management, Diploma in Project Planning and Management, and Diploma in Purchasing and Supplies Management.
We also make significant contributions to several flagship University programmes. Within the Bachelor of Commerce programme, students may specialize in Operations Management, Business Information Systems, or Procurement and Supply Chain Management. The Department further supports postgraduate training through specializations in Operations Management and Management Information Systems within the PhD in Business Administration, and specializations in Operations Management, Procurement and Supply Chain Management, and Management Information Systems within the Master of Business Administration programme.
Our commitment to excellence extends beyond teaching. Our faculty members are actively engaged in research that addresses contemporary organizational and developmental challenges at local, regional, and global levels. Through collaborations with industry, government, professional bodies, development partners, and international institutions, we seek to generate knowledge that informs policy, improves practice, and contributes to sustainable development.
We are proud to host the Secretariat of the Operations Research Society of Eastern Africa (ORSEA), reflecting our leadership in advancing decision sciences and management research within the region. We also maintain international collaborations which enhances opportunities for research, academic exchange, and global engagement.
As we look to the future, our vision is to establish the Department as a leading African centre of excellence in Management Science and Project Planning, recognized for innovative teaching, impactful research, meaningful industry engagement, and the development of graduates who are equipped to lead change in their organizations and communities.
